Balestrate is a delightful seaside location 38 metres above sea level. It stands on a plain in the centre of the beautiful Gulf of Castellammare.
In ancient times the town was called Sicciara, from the Sicilian Siccia meaning cuttlefish, due to the abundant numbers found in its waters. Balestrate is a popular tourist destination in addition to being Sicily's second largest fishing port.
In recent years tourists from all over Europe have led local tour operators to expand the services available to visitors.

The town's golden beach stretches for 15 km and the water is crystal clear and shallow over an extensive area, making this location an ideal destination for families with young children. This stretch of coast also offers the possibility of enjoying underwater and surface fishing, sailing and surfing. In addition to the extensive sands, a variety of summer facilities are also available on the beach, including food outlets, games rooms and entertainment as well as discos in the evening.

The surrounding towns and villages, Castellammare del Golfo, Scopello, San Vito Lo Capo, Erice, Segesta, Alcamo Marina, Cinisi and Terrasini provide plenty of markets, monuments and magnificent views for great days out.
